Celebrating Exceptional Published Research Contributing to the
Understanding and Treatment of Venous Disease
Background:
Venous disease affects approximately 76 million Americans and is known to increase the risk death and to diminish quality of life for affected individuals. Venous disease is a major public health issue. The translation of advances in basic science and clinical research into improvements in patient care is central to the vascular health of the population.
The Venous Disease Coalition is a collaborative network of more than 35 professional and public organizations that are united by one common goal: to improve both public and professional awareness of venous disease. The VDC’s vision is to create a society committed to the prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment of venous disease and its complications. It is the mission of the VDC to promote efforts to improve the survival rates and quality of life for individuals with, or at risk for, venous disease.
The Coalition seeks to identify, on an annual basis, exceptional contributions to venous disease research. These awards will assist health care practitioners, medical journals, the media, and the public by featuring important new knowledge in this field.
Award Purpose:
To recognize important recent research that is relevant to the understanding and/or treatment of venous disease.
Criteria:
Nominated research papers should have provided important or novel insights into the basic science of thrombogenesis and thrombus resolution; clinical outcomes; or the implementation of quality improvements and/or public awareness of venous disease. These categories are not intended to be all inclusive and additional relevant areas of research may be equally worthy of recognition.
Selection Mechanism:
Two mechanisms will be used to solicit nominations:
- A multidisciplinary sub-group of Science Committee members will be assigned to review venous disease-related research from scientific journals and identify appropriate nominations.
- A Call for Nominations will be issued to member organizations and medical journals through a press release and the Coalition’s E-news. Any member of the Coalition can nominate articles in each of the award categories (below).
- Articles must have been published between January 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009.
- Award winners will be determined by members of the Venous Disease Coalition’s Science Committee. The final selections will be based on the quality of the research and its potential impact on the understanding and/or treatment of venous disease. If a member of the Science Committee was involved in any way with the research under consideration, he or she will not participate in the selection process.
Award Categories:
Acknowledging that comparison of research value across disciplines is challenging, nominations will be accepted in the following three award categories:
- Basic science
- Clinical outcomes
- Implementation of quality improvement, or public awareness of the impact of venous disease
Submission Requirements For the “Call for Nominations”:
- A short description (150-300 words) of the features that makes this research meritorious and deserving of the 2009 Venous Research Award.
- A copy of the article
- Up-to-date contact information for the lead author of the article

The awards will be presented at the Vascular Disease Foundation’s dinner September 16, 2009, the evening before the Venous Disease Coalition’s Annual Meeting September 17, 2009 in Washington, DC. This is a monetary award and travel and hotel expenses for the recipient of the awards will be provided. Winners will be notified the week of June 15, 2009.
